Long molecules such as fibrous proteins are particularly difficult to characterise structurally. The use of a Micro Volume Couette Flow Linear Dichroism (LD) cell with a sample volume of only 40 uL is ideally suited for use with biological samples.
Couette flow orientation is created by sandwiching the sample between two cylinders, one static whilst the other rotates. This has proved to be the optimal technique employed for Linear Dichroism experiments in many laboratories around the world.
Dioptica Capillary Micro Volume Couette Flow LD Cells utilise extruded quartz rods and capillaries positioned in some cases between focusing and collecting lenses and is available in non-thermostatted, electrically heated and Peltier thermostatted versions.
Dioptica manufacture the instrument, which was inspired and developed by the research requirements of Professor Alison Rodger at the University of Warwick.
Dioptica LD Cell is currently supplied for use with JASCO J-Series Circular Dichroism Spectropolarimeters. Each LD Cell is supplied with a base plate to fit either the standard or large sample compartment. In addition, a spare light-tight cover plate is provided to enable the electrical connections of the controller to connect to the LD Cell in the sample compartment of the spectropolarimeter.
The electrically heated version is designed to work isothermally. The Peltier version requires that the user has an existing JASCO Peltier controller which enables the unit to be programmed from JASCO Spectra Managerâ„¢ software allowing both isothermal and temperature ramping experiments.
